VxVM overcomes the physical limitations of hard disk devices by providing a logical volume management layer to allow volumes to span multiple disks. In addition, VxVM also provides functions that can improve fault tolerance and fast recovery of disk failures. VxVM supports a redundant array of independent disks (RAID) model, so you can implement configurations to prevent disk and hardware failures and improve I/O throughput. VxVM provides easy-to-use online disk storage management functions for computing environments and storage area network (SAN) environments. From the perspective of applications and operating systems, VxVM volumes are physical disks on which file systems, databases, and other managed data objects can be configured. VxVM is a storage management subsystem, which can be used to manage physical disks as a logical device called a volume. (There are no specific restrictions on physical disks for logical devices.) VxVM is a storage management subsystem, which can manage physical disks as logical devices. Veritas provides Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM), which is packaged as a standalone add-in or as part of a larger software package, such as Veritas On-Line Storage Manager. Both companies provide products that help UNIX system administrators manage storage devices in a very flexible way. In the UNIX® storage management market, there are two major leading vendors: IBM and Veritas (now Symantec).
